Whether we get a wet summer or not, in the near future, lack of water is going to become a serious problem. We hear of huge reservoirs being constructed but with many years before they are in operation. When rain is forecast for East Anglia it nearly always seems to miss it!
How can we save water?
1. Take quicker showers - stand in a washing up bowl to keep water for plants.
2. Use a beaker when cleaning teeth and turn the tap off.
3. Put out bowls and buckets if rain is forecast.
4. Connect water butts to downpipes.
5. When watering the garden use watering cans rather than a hose pipe.
In the garden. The more organic material worked into the soil the better, mulch around plants with leaf mould, lawn mowing's, straw or manure.
Grow succulents – sedums, ground cover. Go with the flow of plants, if they are happy let them re-seed.
Lawns may turn brown, but they green up again very quickly after a rain.
Put water out for birds, preferably off the ground away from cats.
A garden pond is wonderful to watch and a brilliant habitat, if possible let it fill naturally.
Let’s hope for a balance of sunshine and showers this summer.
We have the SWWAG AGM on Monday 21st July at 7pm at Sid’s Piece. Everyone is welcome. Normally it’s very quick and informal, and we will have an Open Morning and Walk around on Sunday 27th July 10am - 1pm.
In the natural order of things, as a group we are al ‘growing’ older and needing to be succeeded by younger members of the community who can help to keep this small corner of Stanton a haven for wildlife.
