Plenty of winter activity at Sid's Piece. Late January is when we cut the basket willow, this year it has not grown so well, we think because it has not had enough light - too many other trees shading it out. So, we have been busy coppicing sallow and clearing around the willow, hoping that it will grow better next year.
Trees are vital for our existence, 'photosynthesis' being the magic formula. Trees, through their leaves, take in carbon dioxide and water and, with the help of sunlight, create oxygen and glucose. The more mature trees we have the better.
The sallow that we have cut is fast growing and short lived and has seeded itself at Sid's Piece. However, some of the timber we cut in past years has seasoned and can make good logs for the fire and is free for anyone who can use it and is piled near the gate. Of course we would love to see you at a Work Party, if you would like to give something back.
There are Work Parties are on the last Sunday of each month (January 26th and February 23rd) from 10am till 1pm. Looking forward to Spring!
