Autumn mists and mellow fruitfulness. At Sid's Piece we have a variety of hedgerow fruits which are abundant this year; blackberries, bullace and crab apple.
September/October is the time for autumn butterflies; the red admiral and comma, the dark orange butterfly with pinked edges to its wings. Both of these will feed on these autumn fruits and berries, especially when they are over their best. Do go and enjoy a peaceful afternoon at Sid's Piece picking blackberries for jam or blackberry and apple crumble. The umbellifers have done really well this year, loving all that rain in the spring.
Umbellifers, or umbrella plants as I call them, like hogweed, cow parsley and the beautiful lace like wild carrot. Insects like them for their nectar. If you look carefully at wild carrot flower, in the centre there is a red spot, this is to attract insects to the plant for pollination.
On Sunday 29th September at 10.00am we have a work party at Sid's Piece. We are going to attempt to make a large butterfly hotel from old pallets. If you have any old hosepipe, tiles or flower stalks do bring them along, it should be fun filling in the gaps to make a protective wall for bugs and even small animals to spend the winter in. Hope to see lots of you there.
