On Sunday 28th April we held our annual Plant and Craft Fair at Wyken Hall. It was wet and cold, but many people braved the weather, even with smiles on their faces. We ended up doing almost as well as we always do at such a beautiful venue. So thank you to everyone who helped, especially Sir Kenneth and Lady Carla Carlisle.
We have dried out now and vibrant spring growth has burst into life, but where are the summer migrant birds - swallows, swifts and the cuckoo? I have been told that one has been heard, but not by me! Another bird from West Africa is the turtle dove which should arrive in April or May. Has anyone seen one? Smaller and prettier than a woodpigeon with its gentle purring coo.
Last year SWWAG, and particularly Ian Shilling, took part in a nationwide Operation Turtle Dove project, because they have been seen around Shepherds Grove Park and Upthorpe area. Ian spread the special seed on closely mown areas at Sid’s Piece, as they need thick scrubby areas to nest. Whether they did we don’t know. I am waiting and listening.

It's a wonderful time of the year to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of early summer.
